In March 27, 1998, FDA of the United States approved the marketing of viagra, a new generation of oral medicine for treating the dysfunction of erection in males, thus announced the coming of viagra era. But accompanied by the clinical application, it has been gradually realized that though viagra has its obvious therapeutic effect, it is not omnipotent. As told by the male users, viagra really can promote the congestion and erection of penis, while it is not capable of fully mobilizing the so called “essence, Qi and spirit” in the traditional Chinese medicine, one may have a somewhat numb feeling in penis during sexual intercourse and is lack of the pleasant sensation of natural erection, and thus the quality of sexual life will be significantly reduced. Side effects have also been found in its clinical application including headache, flush of the face and dyspepsia. What terrifying is that 69 persons died of taking viagra within six months after its marketing. Nevertheless, the profit of viagra had even achieved 1.32 billion USD merely in the first three months of marketing.

    Ling Yang Dan No. 2 (Male sexuality-promoting pellet No. 2)

[Main components] Root of Ginseng (radix Panax ginseng), root of common peony (radix Paeonia alba), fruit of Asiatic cornelian cherry (Cornus officinalis), and others, (processed from pure Chinese drugs, none of western medicine is included).
[Efficacy] Stimulate the essence to fill the marrow, warm and recuperate the kidney-Yang, nourish and recuperate the kidney-water.
[Indications] Impotence, hyposexuality of females, reduction of sexual function in both males and females due to asthenia of kidney; and darkish complexion and pigmented spots caused by asthenia of kidney.
[Explanation of the prescription] It was pointed out in LeizhengzhicaiYangwei that: “Most of the impotence cases are resulted from impairment of over-sexuality, excessive anxiety, kidney impairment due to fright, congenital insufficiency or lack of proper diet after birth.……” Impotence is usually in relation with liver, kidney and three meridians of Yangming, especially the kidney. In this prescription, drugs for promoting fluid production and replenishing marrow are chosen as the “monarch”; drugs for warming and invigorating kidney Yang and nourishing kidney-Yin are chosen as the “minister”. Such composition may promote the vigorousness of renal essence and renal Qi, and thus cure the impotence of essence consumption type.
[Curative effect] The curative effect may generally be felt 2-4 days after medication. Recovery may generally be achieved 5 days for impotence and 8 days for reduction of sexual function after continuously taking this preparation. (It is appropriate to prolong the duration of medication for those over 40 years old.)

[Precaution]
 (1) Take Ling Yang Dan continuously 5 days for common impotence and 8 days for reduction of sexual function (because of the loss of both kidney-Yin and kidney-Yang in some extent, therefore, in order to promote the essence and fill the marrow, longer medication is necessary for those with reduced sexual function). The curative effect may vary according to the difference of age, constitution, condition of illness, course of disease, the extent of reduction of kidney water and kidney-Yang, as well as the difference of drug sensitivity. For those patients with impotence or reduction of sexual function caused by other diseases or some medicine, and in case of the desired curative effect may not be achieved, the medication period can be prolonged. And if the satisfactory curative effect comes earlier, the medication can be suspended regardless of the period of treatment mentioned above.
(2) If sexual function has turn to normal as indicated by the occurrence of erection when fall asleep without sexual stimulation or has restored to the satisfactory status, the medication may be discontinued to avoid the undesired erection due to stimulation by walk, exercise and friction. The same principle is also suitable for female users: suspend the medication appropriately.
