Ling Xueya Dan No. 2 (Blood pressure-calming pellet No. 2)
[Main components] Root of medicinal cyathulae (radix Cyathula tomentosa), root of common peony (radix Paeonia alba), eucommia bark (cortex Eucommia ulmoides), and others (processed from pure traditional Chinese medicine, none of western medicine is included).
[Efficacy] Nourish Yin and reinforce Yang.
[Indications] Primary and secondary hypertension with symptoms of dizziness, headache and tinnitus, or the hypertension may not be dropped by western medicine or its effect is not satisfied.
[Explanation of the prescription] In this prescription, drugs for nourishing kidney Yin are chosen as the “monarch”, drugs for reinforce Yin to strengthen Yang are chosen as the “minister”. The combination of these drugs may act altogether to nourish both Yin and Yang, invigorate kidney and consolidate vital base, nourish Yin and clear away fire, so as to lead blood to flow downward.
[Curative effect] In general, the effect could be felt after 3-12 days of medication. And, for mild cases, blood pressure will return to normal by 1 to 3 courses of treatment (60 days for each course) and become recovery after a period of consolidation (approximately 1/3 time course of treatment); no more medication will be needed and no rebound will occur after stopping medication. For serious cases, blood pressure will continuously descend along with each course of treatment, and, in relation to the differences of age, constitution, condition and course of disease, and the medicinal sensibility, the patients may generally recover with more courses of treatment.
[Precaution] (1) This preparation can be taken directly if the patient does not take western hypotenser. Whereas, patients who usually take western hypotenser should not stop these western medicines immediately when take Ling Xueya Dan. When blood pressure decreases definitely to below 130mmHg (systolic) and 85mmHg (diastolic) by taking Ling Xueya Dan, western hypotenser may then decrease slightly and gradually. If the decrease of western medicine is too much so that the blood pressure rebounds, the amount of western hypotenser ought to increase appropriately. By way of adjusting the quantity, western medicine will finally be stopped. Blood pressure should be measured every day. As blood pressure return to normal, recovery will be achieved after a period of consolidation; no more medication, neither western nor Chinese, will be needed thereafter, and no rebound will occur after stopping medication.
(2) As the indices have decreased to the abovementioned values, if the medicine used is of slow releasing type and is difficult to break off with hands, it is better to adopt smaller one or fast releasing type to facilitate the quantity adjustment of western medicine. Besides, when the fast releasing form is not satisfactory for blood pressure control, it is suitable to use the original slow releasing form; but it ought to be kept in mind that systolic pressure should not be under 90mmHg, and diastolic pressure should not be less than 60mmHg.
(3) Tea drinking is forbidden 15 min before and 30 min after medication.
(4) Patients with other diseases, including common cold, fever, cough, diarrhea due to acute gastroenteritis, as well as with excessive internal heat symptoms such as toothache and sore-throat, are not suitable to take this preparation simultaneously.
Ling Xueya Dan No. 3 (Blood pressure-calming pellet No. 3)
[Main components] Rhizome of tall gastrodia (rhizome Gastrodia elata), root of prepared rehmsnnia (rhizome Rehmannia glutinosa), raw tortoise shell and plastron, and others (processed from pure traditional Chinese medicine, none of western medicine is included).
[Efficacy] Nourish liver and kidney, nourish Yin and suppress the excessive Yang.
[Indications] Primary and secondary hypertension with symptoms of headache, dizzy, palpitation, feverish sensation over five centers, or the hypertension may not be dropped by western medicine or its effect is not satisfied.
[Explanation of the prescription] In this prescription, drugs for nourishing and invigorating the liver and the kidney are chosen as the ”monarch”, drugs for nourishing Yin and restraining the excessive Yang are chosen as the “minister”. The properties of the traditional Chinese medicines, including four natures, five flavors, actions of ascending, descending, dispersing upward and sinking downward, are utilized in this prescription to regulate the activity of Qi in the human body, in order to nourish the liver and the kidney, calm the fire of deficiency type, so as to treat both the branch and .root simultaneously.
